Rickard Posten grew up in the MPD family barracks at Summerland, the son of an unhappy marriage. His father wasted trading his monthly stipend on alcohol and was abusive to both Rickard and his mother. Rickard had an older brother who died in early childhood and a younger sister with who fled home for the streets as a young teen.
Rickard resents the limited options for his future and abstains from any kind of drink or drug as a rejection of his father's choices. Even though his paternal grandfather graduated from the first ever class of MPD guardsmen, his father sullied the family's name by starting petty fights and gained a reputation for being a cheater and liar when gambling. Rickard believes that he has to work twice as hard to make his way up through the MPD hierarchy simply because of his surname. Dedicated to restoring his family's honor, he insists on being called "Posten" at all times by everyone but his closest friends, of which there are few.
